Common Questions, answered plainly
Not sure where to start? These are the questions people ask most. If yours isn't here, tell us what happened and we'll answer it.
Working with Infinity Legal
-
You will work with Kris-Andre Smith, the firm's founder and Managing Partner, and one of his law clerks. They work together so you get answers and always know what comes next.
-
Tell us what happened. You can call Kris-Andre or use the form on the Contact page. He will listen, ask questions to understand what you want, explain your options in plain language, and tell you what comes next.
-
Every matter is different, so the cost depends on what you need. Some matters may be handled on contingency, where you pay no legal fees up front. Kris-Andre bills $250 an hour for certain matters. Your first consultation is free. Call us and we'll explain which option fits your situation before you decide anything.
-
It depends on what happened, and no one can answer that honestly before reviewing the facts. If you were fired, offered a severance package, or treated unfairly at work, Kris-Andre can review what happened, explain what the law says, and tell you where you stand.
Wrongful Dismissal and Severance
-
Not until you understand it. A deadline is your employer's timeline, not yours. Before you agree to anything, have the package reviewed so you know what you are being offered and what rights you may be giving up. Kris-Andre can review it and explain your options. Read more about wrongful dismissal and severance.
-
Time limits apply, and some can be short. The safest step is to talk to a lawyer soon after your employment ends.
-
Being fired means your employment ended. Wrongful dismissal means it ended without proper notice or pay in place of notice, or in a way the law doesn't allow. Not every termination is a wrongful dismissal. A review helps answer that.
-
It can. A layoff or restructuring is still the end of a job, and what you were owed depends on the details.
Human Rights at Work
-
Yes, you may be able to. Many concerns come up while someone is still employed, and a human rights issue doesn't need to end in termination to be worth looking into. Read more about human rights claims.
-
Unfair treatment can be unfair without being a human rights issue. It becomes one when it's connected to a protected ground, such as your disability or your age. A review helps sort that out.
-
No. Bring what you have. If something is missing, we'll tell you what would help.
-
The same facts may raise a wrongful dismissal question as well. Read about wrongful dismissal and severance.
Workplace Investigations
-
It depends on how many people are involved and how much information there is.
-
Partly. We keep what we learn about the organization that hired us confidential. But what people tell us in an interview is not confidential from that organization. We interview everyone involved, then give the organization a written report of our findings. If you are interviewed, expect that what you say may appear in the report.
-
No. A neutral investigator doesn't represent either party. Read more about workplace investigations.
Entertainment Law
-
No. Ask for time and have it reviewed first. Read more about entertainment law.
-
A free 30-minute assessment of your situation. You tell us about the deal and what you want from it, and we tell you where you stand.
-
No. We work with artists, creatives, and entertainment professionals. Tell us about your deal and we'll let you know how we can help.
Notary Services
-
No. Our notary service is in person. Request a time through the form and we'll confirm your appointment. Read more about notary services.
-
Yes. We don't accept walk-ins. Use the form to request a time.
-
Tell us what the document is for and who is asking for it. We'll tell you what you need.
Independent Legal Advice
-
Often because the other party wants proof you understood what you signed. A lawyer explains the document to you and confirms that you understood it before you sign. Read more about independent legal advice.
-
Yes. That's the point. Bring the document and your questions.
-
Yes. We can also meet in person.
-
Yes. Send it to us before your appointment so we can read it first. That way the appointment goes to your questions, not to reading it for the first time.
